Shannon McGinnis and Alyssa Finelli each registered first-half goals, and Lehigh Valley held off a late Hershey FC push to come away with a 2-1 win in the Tempest’s 2018 Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Mid-Atlantic Division home opener Saturday night at the Cedar Crest College Falconplex.
McGinnis put the Tempest (1-0) on the board in the first half when she got on the end of Jess Wetherhold’s corner and put it away for a 1-0 lead. Finelli increased the Tempest’s before the half when took Devyn Anderson’s pass and beat Hershey’s goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Hershey (0-1) would answer back with a goal off a corner of their own mid-way through the second half, but that is all the scoring they were able to muster as Lehigh Valley held on for the win.
Darien Vercillo and Sarafina Valenti combined for the win in goal. The Tempest are back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Warminster to take on the Philly Fever (7 p.m.).
